October 20-23, 2008, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain

Conference Web Site: http://www.upc.edu/ER2008/

============================================================
SCOPE OF THE CONFERENCE

The International Conference on Conceptual Modeling is a leading

Topics of interest span the entire spectrum of conceptual modeling
including research and practice in areas such as theories of concepts and ontologies underlying conceptual modeling, methods and tools for developing and communicating conceptual models, and techniques for transforming conceptual models into effective implementations. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Since the proceedings will be published by Springer in the LNCS series, authors must submit manuscripts using the LNCS style. See
www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html for style files and details. The suggested number of pages is 14, and the maximum number of pages is 16. Manuscripts not submitted in the LNCS style or having more than 16 pages will not be reviewed and thus automatically rejected. The final, camera-ready version must not exceed 14 pages to avoid page charges. A paper submitted to ER 2008 cannot be under review for any other conference or journal during the time it is being considered for ER 2008. Authors of selected papers will be invited to submit extended
versions for possible publication in the Elsevier??s Data & Knowledge Engineering journal.

WORKSHOPS
---------

ER 2008 will host a number of workshops addressing different areas
related to conceptual modeling that complement the main ER 2008
conference. Workshops are intended to serve as an intensive
collaborative forum for exchanging late breaking ideas and theories in an evolutionary stage. We encourage prospective workshop organizers to submit proposals for highly-interactive workshops focusing on either in-depth analysis or broad-ranging approaches to areas related to conceptual modeling.

Important Dates
---------------

Workshop proposal submission: December 17, 2007
Notification of acceptance: January 14, 2008
Camera-ready paper submission: June 21, 2008

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

A workshop proposal should be about 2-5 pages long and contain the
following information:

  * Title;
  * Summary;
  * Topics;
  * Format and duration;
  * Organizers (attach short CVs, limit of 2 pages each);
  * Proposed program committee;
  * Expected submission and acceptance rate;
  * Type (academic and/or industrial) and number of expected
      participants;
  * Significance in relation to topics of the main conference;
    and
  * Details of any previous workshops.

Workshop proposals are reviewed based on the quality of the proposal, its relation to the main ER topics, and the likelihood to attract enough participants.

Exact workshop paper submission and author notification due dates are at discretion of workshop organizers but must fit within the time-line indicated.

Proceedings of all ER workshops are to be published as a single volume of Springer LNCS to be distributed at the ER 2008 conference. All the workshop papers should be limited to 10 pages in LNCS format. It is expected that the organizers of ER workshops conform to the rules imposed by the ER steering committee such as the acceptance rate for all workshops will not exceed 50% and organizers are not allowed to submit their own papers to their workshop. Workshop proposals should be
submitted by email to either of the workshop chair listed below.

ER2008 PhD WORKSHOP
-------------------

The ER2008 PhD Workshop is intended to bring together PhD students
working on topics related to the ER conference series. The workshop will offer PhD students the opportunity to present, discuss, and receive feedback on their research in a constructive and collegial atmosphere.
The discussion will be led by prominent researchers in the field of
conceptual modeling. The workshop is co-located with and will take place immediately before the ER2008 conference (Monday, October 20th, 2008). The workshop language is English. No proceedings will be published (so future publication of PhD thesis work in conferences or journals is not hampered), but accepted submissions will be made available to participants electronically.

Further details on the organization and paper submission will be given in a separate PhD Workshop Call for Papers.

PhD WORKSHOP CO-CHAIRS

  John Mylopoulos, University of Toronto, Toronto (Canada)
  Jordi Cabot, Universitat Oberta Catalunya, Barcelona (Spain)

DEMONSTRATIONS PROGRAM
----------------------

The ER2008 Demonstrations program is an exciting and highly interactive
way to demonstrate conceptual modeling research, and an excellent way to advertise the applicability of the results. Proposals should be focused on new conceptual modeling developments, advances in applying conceptual modeling, or innovative use of conceptual modeling techniques. The demonstrations program is focused on academic and research software, and it is not intended for the demonstration of commercial products.

IMPORTANT DATES

Proposals for demonstrations: March 29, 2008
Notification:                 May 24, 2008
Camera-ready papers:          June 21, 2008

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Demonstration proposals must describe clearly what will be demonstrated and how the contribution will be illustrated interactively. Optionally, proposals can include a URL that shows a preliminary version of the demo (e.g., screenshots, or even better an interactive program).

All submitted demo proposals must be formatted according to the
instructions for submission format for research submissions and must be no more than four (4) pages. This page limit includes all parts of the paper: title, abstract, body, and bibliography. Accepted demo proposals will appear in the final proceedings of the main conference but will be only two pages long.

  Martin Gogolla, University of Bremen, Bremen (Germany)
  Juan Carlos Trujillo, Universidad de Alicante, Alicante (Spain)

TUTORIALS PROGRAM
-----------------

Tutorial proposals must clearly identify the intended audience and its assumed background. Tutorials whose audience is broader than the conceptual modeling research community are encouraged.

IMPORTANT DATES

Proposals for tutorials: June 30, 2008
Notification of acceptance: July 30, 2008.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Proposals must be no more than 5 pages and must provide a sense of both the scope of the tutorial and depth within the scope. The intended length of the tutorial (1.5 or 3 hours) should also be indicated, together with justification that a high-quality presentation will be achieved within the chosen time period and the indication of the main learning outcomes. Tutorial proposals should address the following issues:
  *  The presenter(s),
  * Scope and novelty of the tutorial,
  * Expected audience and attendance rate,
  * Format of tutorial, (1.5 or 3 hours),
  * Details of any previous presentations on the same topic.

Tutorials proposals should be submitted by email to either of the chairs listed below.

PANELS
------

ER 2008 solicits proposals for panel sessions related to the conference
topics about which there is controversy and thus a need for public
discussion. Panel proposals should specify the questions/issues the
panel will discuss and should include a list of committed panelists. We strongly encourage panels that have a mixture of academic and industry panelists. We expect that a range of viewpoints will be represented in the panel session. The role of the panel moderator is to state the initial relevant issues and moderate the panel session. Each panelist will then make a short presentation of his/her position. The moderator
will then direct a discussion/debate among the panelists and encourage audience interaction. Short panel summaries will appear in the proceedings of the main conference.

Panels proposals should be submitted by email to either of the chairs listed below.

IMPORTANT DATES

Proposals for panels: April 29, 2008
Notification:                 May 24, 2008
Camera-ready panel summaries: June 21, 2008
