2nd IEEE International Workshop on Ontology Alignment and Visualization - OnAV'09 http://www.ifs.tuwien.ac.at/~mlanzenberger/OnAV09 March 16 - 19, 2009, Fukuoka, Japan, Fukuoka Institute of Technology In conjunction with the International Conference on Complex, Intelligent and Software Intensive Systems In addition to regular papers, we also solicit submissions of position papers articulating vision statements describing challenging future directions, critiquing research problems, and placing new research questions. *** Important Dates *** Submission Deadline for all Papers: September 30, 2008 Author Notification: November 20, 2008 Author Registration: November 30, 2008 Proceedings Version: December 15, 2008 Workshop Dates: March 16 - 19, 2009 Scope: Ontologies defined using semantic technologies such as RDF/S or OWL can be used to precisely define the domain knowledge of a knowledge-based system. Naturally, as the number of ontologies developed increases, comes the need for methods to integrate or align the separate ontologies. Ontology alignment algorithms can be used to establish semantic correspondences between related, but different, knowledge bases. Nonetheless, validating ontology alignment results is a challenge because it requires that the person undertaking the alignment has an in depth knowledge of both data sources. Over the past decade a number of algorithms and techniques have been developed for aligning two or more ontologies using automated and semi-automated methods. However, it is recognized that human intervention is required to make judgments on the quality of the alignment pairs that result from such methods. Promising techniques from the information visualization community can, and have been applied, to help support such decision-making tasks in ontology alignment. Furthermore, initial studies have shown that using visualization helps improve the accuracy of the alignment results. Many challenges remain to be addressed within the broad area of ontology alignment such as: scalability, human-computer interaction, cognitive aspects, alignment accuracy, applicability of different approaches, ontology evolution, run-time requirements of semantic web services and applications, etc. Target Group: The OnAV Workshop aims to provide a forum for researchers discussing state of the art approaches to ontology management, and in particular, to investigate how information visualization techniques can be applied to support ontology alignment decision making tasks. However, we also encourage researchers and practitioners working in other areas such as ontologies for Semantic Web applications, Web2.0 and Web3.0, to submit interesting and challenging contributions. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): Ontology Alignment, Mapping and Merging Ontology Visualization Supporting Ontology Management Tasks Using Information Visualization Automated and Human-mediated Tasks of the Alignment Process User Interfaces for Ontology Alignment Visual Metaphors in Alignment User-specific and Task-oriented Ontology Alignment Scalability and Ontology Mapping, Merging and Aligning Quality in Ontology Alignment and Mapping Alignment Meta-Data Alignment Vocabularies Standardization of Alignment Data Applications of Ontology Alignment Similarity Measures for Ontology Alignment Ontologies and Problem-Solving Methods Submission Guidelines & Publication: The papers should be prepared using the IEEE CS format, two columns layout, single-spaced, 10-point, and using page numbers. The length of regular papers should not exceed 6 pages (including figures and tables). For position papers the authors are encouraged to use 'Position Paper' in the title to distinguish them from regular papers. For submission the paper should not contain the names of the authors or any references that may point to them as the authors of the paper. Each submission will receive at least three blind reviews. Proceedings of the workshop will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press. The best papers presented at the workshop will be selected for publication in an international journal. Position papers will be reviewed and published in the proceedings of the workshop by IEEE Computer Society Press as well.
